Big Rapids Virtual School

Ashlie Howell

"I was originally a student at Reed City High School. I went there for four years. When it was my senior year,  the guidance counselor told me I didn’t have enough credits to graduate. That’s when I asked how many credits I needed. He told me I needed a lot and I would have had to go thru the 2016-2017 school year and half of the 2017-2018 school year to graduate. That’s when I decided to check into the Big Rapids Virtual School. I met with Mr. Buckingham and by going to the virtual school; I would be able to graduate on time if I worked very hard. When we went through my transcripts they found I only need four credits. So thanks to Big Rapids Virtual School I was able to graduate somewhat on time. In the future, I plan on going to college, raising my son, and building a family.

BRVS is a great school to achieve your dreams at. You can work at your own pace and the teachers are great motivators."

My time at Big Rapids Virtual School has been an amazing experience.  I never did well at the high school because I learned at a slower pace than most of the other students.  At first, I was a little skeptical about going to the virtual school.  I had heard that only “bad kids” went there.  Also, I was very lazy about doing school work. When I started going to BRVS, I didn’t care about when I got my classes done.  I stopped caring about a lot of things and I decided I was going to drop out and get my GED.  After a couple of years, and some soul searching, I thought to myself, “Man, I really need to get my life together if I want to have any kind of a future. “  With the help of my family, my friends, my mentor and my teachers, I got my head in the game and got the desire to get to work.  Attending the Career Center has helped prepare me for a great career after high school.  Sometimes, I thought I would never finish, but I did!

The beginning of high school was rough.Whether it was with teachers, parents or other students, I was a poor communicator.  I wasn’t very good at making friends because I felt that having friends wasn’t that important.  I put anything and everything ahead of school work, which led me to fall behind and not graduate with my class.

After enrolling at BRVS, I discovered that I could put in the effort and do the work.  It might have taken me a little bit longer than other students, but I learned to keep at it until I was finished, one class at a time.

In my time at BRVS, I also learned about myself.  I’ve grown as a person, and now feel more confident in talking to other people, making friends, and expressing myself.

I don’t regret the choices I made, because they made me into the person I am today.  Your school experience helps shape you into who you are, and BRVS has helped me to be a better person.  I was surrounded by people that supported me and always looked for the best in me.

There aren’t  enough  words to show my appreciation , so I’ll just say “thank you”.

I am getting ready for graduation and I'm already applying to many colleges.

My job has helped me get the money I need for school and my new apartment.

My plans are to graduate from BRVS (almost there) and then go to college.  I would love to be either a vet tech or a vet.

BRVS helped me reach my goals by pushing me to be my best that I can be. The teachers there helped me get to where I am today.
