Student Work Permits - What You Need to Know

Who Needs a Work Permit

Any student under 18 working or volunteering in Michigan—even during summer—must have a valid work permit on file before starting any job or volunteer position, according to Michigan.gov.

For minors under 16, use form CA-6

For minors ages 16-17, use form CA-7

How to Complete a Student Work Permit

Follow these steps to make sure everything is filled out correctly and legally before a student starts working:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Student (Minor) Completes Section I
The student fills out the top portion of the CA-6 or CA-7 work permit form with their personal information.

  2. Employer Completes Section II
The employer fills in job details, including duties, hours, and type of equipment used.

  3. School Verifies & Approves
A designated Issuing Officer at the school will:

    • Verify the student’s age using proper documentation (e.g., birth certificate or driver’s license)

    • Ensure that the job meets all state and federal labor regulations

    • Complete Section III by signing and dating the form

  4. School Keeps a Copy
The Issuing Officer will keep a copy of the signed work permit in the student’s school file.

  5. Student Delivers Permit to Employer
The student gives the original completed work permit to the employer before starting work.
