Dear BRHS Parents/Guardians,

As the issues surrounding the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) increase, the staff and myself want you to know that we are taking every precaution to protect the students in the building. Protocols for cleaning and sanitation are being strictly followed. We are educating students and staff on procedures to prevent infections. Furthermore, we are adopting new processes to promote social distancing by limiting the number of students gathered in a space to less than one hundred individuals. If we observe these practices and support one another in a calm manner, we will get through this situation. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Good afternoon BRHS families!

I hope this message finds you in good health and safe.  As you know, Governor Whitmer officially informed us last week that she has suspended face-to-face instruction for the remainder of the school year.  That means that all school related activities including extracurricular, athletic, and all other activities have been suspended as well unfortunately.

We have been directed to create a continuity of learning plan to support teaching and learning through the remainder of the 2019.2020 school year.  BRHS staff and administration are working together along with District administration to put together a workable solution to meet the needs of all our students.  As soon as we have the plan in place, we will communicate it out to all of our stakeholders.

A special comment to all of our seniors and their parents/guardians: We understand the impact that the Coronavirus pandemic has had on your final semester of high school.  Simply put, it wasn’t supposed to end this way. From stepping up to the plate one last time, to roaming through the halls, and making other lasting memories, this semester was supposed to be the pinnacle of your high school career.  We want you to know that we are committed to hosting a commencement ceremony or some other celebration if at all possible before you turn the page to the next chapter of your lives.  

We miss you.  We hope you stay well, safe, and take care of each other.  We will communicate our next step in the process for students to continue to earn credits as soon as possible.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Seniors:

I know you have all been anxiously waiting for information on how you are to finish out the school year.  Here is what we know up to this point.

Commencement:  BRHS values the importance of a graduation ceremony and so we still plan to have graduation, however it may not be on the original date.  We are working on alternate dates and will get those out to you very soon so you can plan.

Credits for Graduation:  You will be receiving a letter from Ms. Jefts in the next few days detailing exactly what you need to complete in order to graduate.  Please check your email for that information and let her know if you have any questions.

Final Day of “Class”:  You will have until May 22nd to finish all required coursework.  However, if you are not on track to graduate you will be required to continue your coursework until the last day of school for all students which is June 4th.  If you are a Career Center student and not on track to graduate, you must attend Career Center until June 4th as well.

School Access:  We’ve had questions on whether or not you can come to school to get things out of your locker.  Students may not access the building at this point. If you need access to textbooks or your general locker, you may email Mr. Carlson @ dcalrson@brps.org and he can arrange a time for you to pick up the contents.  If you have anything in an athletic locker, that will have to wait since lockers weren’t assigned by names.

Caps & Gowns:  Ms. Jefts has been in communication with Jostens about how caps and gowns will be delivered.  Jostens is waiting until closer to the end of April to decide how they are going to distribute the final items.  Again, watch your email and we will let you know.

Fines:  If you have any outstanding fines you still must pay those in order to receive your diploma.  Please make checks payable to BRHS and mail them to the high school. If you are unsure of your fine amount email Mrs. Simon (rsimon@brps.org) or Mrs. Valentine (svalentine@brps.org).  

Awards Night:  BRHS still wants to honor our awards recipients as we always do, it just may look differently this year.  For right now, please send Ms. Jefts pictures or photocopies of any scholarships you have received. These can be from an organization or from the college you plan to attend.  Please don’t send a scholarship you received from a college you aren’t going to!

Senior Students:

I know you have been anxiously waiting for news on what is still required of you to graduate.  I’ve detailed where you are at with graduation requirements below. To help you understand, let me first explain graduation requirements.  The state of Michigan has a minimum number of credits and specific classes each student must take to earn a diploma called the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC).  This includes 4 years of English, 3 years of science, etc. Each school district has the option to maintain just the minimum number of credits required to graduate or require additional credits.  Many schools go beyond the minimum requirement based on the values and goals of each district, and the number of credits a student is able to earn each year. BRHS’ additional required credits for graduation are: 1 PE class, 2 Fine/Applied Arts classes, Future Connections, 1 Computer class, and electives.

As a result of school not being in session for the remainder of the year, BRHS has decided to modify the graduation requirements for the Class of 2020 to be the minimum required to meet the MMC.  Therefore, if you had one more PE class to finish, one more art, or an elective or two, then those requirements have been waived. The below courses that you are required to finish reflect this change. Also, some of you are not required to finish your Personal Finance class for math because you took Woods 2 this year, and that can count for one senior math class.  

You are allowed to finish any class you want.  If you love a class and you want to do the work to finish, please do so!  But you must let me know if you plan to finish a class that is not required.  Otherwise, I, and your teachers, will assume you are only going to do the required classes.  These classes must be completed by Friday, May 22nd.  

You have completed everything required to graduate and you do not need to finish ANY of your trimester 3 classes.  Please let me know by Monday, April 20th if you plan to finish any of your current classes.  Congratulations, this is great news!

If you attend the career center, you do not need to complete this trimester in order to receive your diploma.  You are still more than welcome to complete it, and it would be a good idea to contact your instructor to see what additional certifications you may receive if you finish.  If this is the career you plan to go into it would benefit you to finish, and finishing out even in difficult circumstances will reflect well on you with your future employer.

Note:  This information is for high school classes only.  If you are enrolled in a college course you are expected to complete the course.  Withdrawing at this point, or failing to complete the course will result in no credit and you being responsible for the full cost of the class. 

The classes you do not plan to finish, and aren’t required, won’t appear on your transcript, as if you never took them.  However, if you tell me you are going to finish a class (or it’s required), and you don’t complete the work, it will go on your transcript as NC (no credit).  If you plan to finish a class (or the career center) that is not required for you to graduate, you MUST let me know by Monday, April 20th, otherwise I will assume you are not finishing the class.  This is a final decision. You can’t change your mind in two weeks asking it to not appear on your transcript.   

Please let me know if you have any questions on your graduation requirements.  I know this is a lot to take in and finishing out your senior year like this is not ideal.  I am here to help, please let me know how!

Good afternoon BRHS families,

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work hard to put in place our learning plan for the remainder of the school year.  

It has not been a simple task to navigate the complexity of graduation requirements, credits, and grades at the high school level for this plan.  That being said, we do believe we have put together a good plan to support the needs of all learners.  

I have included a communication document that should answer many of your questions.  Students may opt for online learning or packet learning. Online learning will begin Monday, April 20th while packets will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, April 21st.

We understand the challenges families face during these difficult times.  We believe our plan offers flexibility, provides supports, and includes academic workload expectations that are reasonable and offer students a fair opportunity to earn credits.

Dear BRHS Families,

As we enter our third week of distance learning, we have a few announcements for you.

Due to logistics, students will no longer be allowed to change their form of instruction. You are either committed to receiving instruction online or instructional packets. 

We will be offering another Instructional Packet Pick-Up/Drop Off on Wednesdays from 11-2 for the remainder of the school year. This will be an addition to Tuesday’s scheduled time of 3-6 pm.

The final instructional packet pick-up for seniors will be on Tuesday, May 19th and Wednesday, May 20th. Final packets for seniors can be dropped off on Tuesday, May 26th and Wednesday, May 27th. 

The final instructional packet pick-up for all underclass students will be Tuesday, May 26th and Wednesday, May 27th. The due dates for drop off are Tuesday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 3. School ends on June 4. 

We will be accepting books and other items that need to be returned to school during the packet pick-up and drop off times on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We can also return locker items at that time. Please let us know ahead of time if you want contents from your locker.

Anyone interested in picking up his/her Woods Project will be able to do so on Monday, May 18th from 10:00 - 12:00. Please come to the back of the school at the new shop storage door entrance and someone will be there to assist you. Please keep in mind social distancing guidelines.

Virtual School

As we begin this journey of the BRVS building being closed for at least the next 3 weeks we want to reassure our students, families, and "fans" that we are all very lucky to be a part of a virtual school! In fact, our program will proceed as usual...with the exception of the building being closed. We will still continue to expect students to make at least the minimum requirements of doing 10 activities each week and they will continue to need to answer the Question of the Week.

We will still be able to help students...only via remote. Beginning tomorrow, students just need to ask for help through the Apex website. We are working on our end to provide as much assistance as possible. We will continue to update everyone as we develop these methods.

Middle School

Dear BRMS Families,

As many of you are aware, last night Governor Whitmer ordered schools in Michigan to be closed from March 16th through April 5th, 2020.  Big Rapids Public Schools will be monitoring this situation and following recommendations from the Michigan Department of Education very closely.  We will share any emerging information and updates with you.  Please look for communication that will be shared by email and posted on our district website at www.brps.org/coronavirus.   

With school being closed, we are postponing large scale school events for our building at this time.  Our BRMS Science Fair and next month's 8th grade field trip to the Houlocaust Museum in southeast Michigan has been postponed.  Our goal is to reschedule these events when school resumes.   Also, during this time when our schools are closed all school activities, such as middle school track and field and drama, have been suspended. 

When our students return to BRMS will have procedures in place to reduce large gatherings of students in common areas before school, during lunch, and after school.  Our school nurse has outlined a plan for us to continue to educate our students and staff on procedures to prevent the spread of infections.  Our facilities staff and transportation teams will be working hard and following proper cleaning protocols to ensure our building and buses meet the proper sanitation standards.

Message from Principal Bull 3/20/2020

Greeting BRMS Families,

I hope this email reaches you and your family are all well and good health.  As we approach our first full week of school being closed due to the Covid-19 virus things have definitely changed in our world.  Without school being formally in session there are things that our students while they are at home to continue the learning process.   

-  If you have access to the internet have our students check their school gmail.  Updates that teachers are sharing through Skyward and google classroom will automatically have notifications sent to our students school email.  

-  If your family doesn't have a device that can access the internet families can request a chromebook from our Technology Director Joe Bauman by directly emailing him and making those arrangements at jbouman@brps.org.

-  One of our regular practices at BRMS is having our students practice DEAR or Drop Everything And Read.  Once a day in each of our classes Monday - Friday students in all grade levels DEAR a book of their choice and work towards an AR or Accelerated Reader goal.  Students can now access their AR tests at home through Renaissance Place at http://renplace.brps.org or www.brpskids to continue to work on their AR reading goals.

-  Through our www.brpskids website students can access Khan Academy, Prodigy and MobyMax to practice academic skills.

-  For all 7th/8th graders Mrs. Lenahan shared student resources to our students through their BRPS school gmail this week as part of our WAY Smart Curriculum and encouraged our students access Xello through www.brps.org under the students tab.  There students can continue to answer questions to further narrow career choices in Career Cruising and help them identify careers in Career Matchmaker application.  

-  BRMS staff plan on reaching out to each of our students/families starting today through next Wednesday checking in them, reminding them of technology, academic resources and our food drop next Thursday, March 26th.

Greetings BRMS Families,
 
I hope this email reaches you this afternoon and your family is healthy and safe.  I want to share an update with all of our families regarding last week's decision by Governor Whitmer to suspend face to face learning for the remainder of the school year.  Today nearly all BRMS staff met virtually to start planning what our distance learning will look like for our students.  We are off to a good start, but still have plenty of things to sort out.  We are hopeful that we will have an update for you by the end of this week and a have plan to share. 
 
Today and tomorrow BRMS staff are reaching out to every student by phone, email or other forms of electronic communication to check in on our students to see how they are doing during this time away from school.  This will become a regular part of our practice.  As staff are reaching out to our students we will seek their input on their learning preferences and we will also be asking to see if our students have access to the internet and a device in which to access it.  Our students were sent a survey by either their fifth grade homeroom or the English Language Arts teachers.  Please have your student check their email and google classroom pages to complete this survey.  Our hope is to share our survey data with our Technology Department this coming Wednesday.   
 
Tomorrow on Tuesday, April 7th we will be sending out our weekly food delivery supply of breakfast and lunch for each student. Our plan moving forward is to continue our weekly distribution every Tuesday. This time bus deliveries will be following our 3 hour delay schedule.  This means that food will be delivered in the morning beginning around 9:10 am. This is approximately three hours later than your normal A.M. bus pickup.  Food pickup will still be at Big Rapids Middle School, but our new pick-up time will be from 3:00 PM through 6:00 PM.
 
In closing we are all in this thing together.  I encourage you to follow safe social distancing, public safety guidelines and stay at home.  Together we will keep our community safe by observing these practices.

BRMS Families,

Thank you for all of your efforts that you have put into making our first week of formal distance learning successful.  We recognize that there have been some bumps in the road and distance learning is not easy.  We want you to know we are flexible and continually looking for ways to improve our procedures and practices.  We want our families to know that we are in this together.  BRMS does not expect our parents to replace our students' actual teachers.  Our teachers will continue to make themselves available to support our students and we will continue to adjust our instruction to help meet the needs of our students.  We can see that our families are doing the best they can to help educate our students and are using the resources they have available.  

All students at the end of the third trimester will be assigned credit or no credit based on their efforts.  Our students will not be penalized in any way for not having had access to participate in distance learning.  If our students were on track and in good standing at the end of the second trimester they will be promoted to the next appropriate grade level next year.  The work currently being assigned will help prepare them for the next grade level.

Next week our BRMS will continue to hold office hours on Monday and Wednesday from 9 am - 1 pm.  If you need to pick up things from your students lockers or medicine from the office those are the times that those tasks should be completed. If these times do not work for you, please reach out to me by email and alternative arrangements can be made.  Student packets will be available for pickup and dropoff in the middle school entranceway on Tuesday 3 - 6 pm and Wednesday 9 am - 1 pm.

Updates and Announcements from BRMS

BRMS Families,

 

I want to say thank you to our parents and guardians for continuing to work with and support our students.  Teaching and learning is hard work.  Without you supporting our students it would be very difficult to continue to keep the learning process going.  This week is teacher appreciation. I want you to know how blessed Mr. Aldrich and I are to work with an incredibly talented staff.  Our BRMS staff cares about our students, their well being and wants to see each of them be successful.  Their efforts to educate our students have been nothing short of amazing throughout this distance learning.

 

BRMS will continue to share lessons through our teachers google classroom and paper packets the weeks of May 11 and May 18th.  The week May 18th our teachers will include lessons and school work for the week of May 25th.  This will be the last week that new class work materials will be sent home to our students.  Our staff will continue to support our students throughout the weeks of May 25th and June 1st hosting office hours, virtual meetings, communicating and being able to support our students.  We are asking that all school work and packets be turned into BRMS by Wednesday, June 3rd.  Our last official day of school will be Thursday, June 4th.    

 

Just a reminder our BRMS office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am - 1pm.  Paper packets can be picked up and dropped off Tuesdays 3 - 6pm or on Wednesday's 9am- 1pm.  If your student has medicine in the office, personal items to retrieve from their lockers, needs to pick up their art projects or return library books to school please plan on making arrangements to retrieve them soon.  If you cannot make one of these previously mentioned times please email at jbull@brps.org.  We will make accommodations for you.  

 

BRMS is planning an end of the celebration for our 8th graders and an event to see off the rest of our students for summer vacation.  This event will occur on the last day of school.  Please look for more details to come.  We also will have our 2019.2020 yearbooks available for our students soon.  Please check your email for more information coming soon.

BRMS Families,

 

As we start another week of distance learning I want to share a couple things with everyone.  This week our teachers are releasing our last two packets of the school year.  They are titled the week of May 18th and May 25th.  This is the same whether your student works in packets or online.  All lesson assignments and student work is due back to BRMS by Wednesday, June 3rd.  

 

Now that all of our assignments have been released, we need to start wrapping up the school year.  As students are completing their school work, we encourage you to come to BRMS return any chromebooks that were checked out, all textbooks and library books.  During this time we would ask you to check with our staff and pick up your student’s personal items that remain in their lockers or are in the office.  Student art projects are also available for pickup at this time in the middle school entranceway.  

 

We want you to be aware that beginning next Tuesday, May 26th the City of Big Rapids will be starting construction on East Bellevue Street and North Warren Ave that loop in front of BRMS.  To access BRMS you will need to use East Grand Traverse Street and pull around to the back of the school.  You then can approach the building from the rear entrance steps.  Alternatively, you can park on North Michigan Ave or at the Public Safety building and walk across the front lawn to the office.  At either entrance to the office support staff will be present to greet and help you.

Dear Brookside Families,

BRPS is closely monitoring this evolving situation and will continue to keep families up to date as new information develops. Please continue to monitor the BRPS website: www.brps.org/coronavirus for district updates, our Brookside Facebook page, our Brookside website www.brps.org/our-schools/brookside-elementary/, as well as emails from Mrs. Schafer and Mr. Haist.

Brookside staff are taking every precaution to protect all students in the building today. Protocols for cleaning and sanitation are being strictly followed. We are continuing to educate students and staff on procedures to prevent the spread of infections.

All students will be cleaning out their lockers and taking personal items home today. Please wash/disinfect these items at home. Students will also be taking home academic packets to work on during this extended break from school. A list of online resources/websites students can use at home will also be included. Brookside will be open until 5:30pm tonight for any parents of absent students that would like to pick up personal items and homework. These items are being bagged and parents will be able to pick up today in the gym.

Please make note of these current updates/changes:

  • Kindergarten registration has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 16 from 5-6:30 at BRHS.
  • Brookside Parent/Teacher conferences (March 19) are cancelled.
  • Leadership Day (April 17) has been postponed, new date TBD.
  • BRPS Food Service Department is currently working on a plan for the next three weeks.

A MESSAGE FROM MISS KENT:

Hello RV Families,

Wow, what an interesting few days. The district has been vigilant in communicating with our families to keep you updated. This is an unfortunate occurrence impacting the entire country. We are experiencing the same questions, concerns, and emotions while trying to work through this problem. Riverview is committed to keeping student learning ongoing while being closed. Our teaching staff will be communicating with you regarding academic work. It is important to maintain a regular schedule of academic time while home so our students don't experience academic slide. We need to prepare for 3rd and 4th-grade MSTEP State Testing and work hard to be successful with the 3rd grade Reading Law. We set high expectations for all our kids and we need to drive student learning. Please make every effort to help in our success.

All student lockers have been cleaned out in preparation for cleaning purposes. If your child was absent today, we are asking that you come to pick up your child's stuff. I will be at school til 5:00 today and Monday morning til 11:30. If you have any questions, please email me or call. There will not be any staff in the building while we are closed.

Good Morning to our RV Families,

Pretty quiet in the school. I miss the children laughing, saying hello, being excited and playing. The Coronavirus has certainly changed how we think and act. All the disruptions may be obstacles to hurdle but don't let it get you down. This too shall pass. We want to keep everyone safe and healthy so we can eventually get back in school. Just a reminder to keep your kids on a routine that incorporates learning. We've been getting a variety of companies offering free learning experiences online. Most of our teachers have shared the programs we use at RV, however, if you come across more online sites that interest your kids, use them. I will periodically share some of those sites. 

We will be delivering food for all families around the district today. This is for everyone! Families can pick up food at BRMS during the operating hours of 12:00 to 3:00 today or we will be delivering to all bus stops beginning at 3:45. If you have any questions, email Jane DeVries jdevries@brps.org. 

The technology department is working on a check out system for devices. We will push the info out soon.

There are some families that need to pick up their child's belongings and work at RV still. I am in the office today until 1:30. Please come get your stuff!

Hello RV Families,

I just wanted to touch base regarding plans for educating your child(ren). The teachers are working extremely hard to push academic work out. Most of them had contacted you by email or phone to get bits of information regarding online accessibility, delivery of content, phone numbers and the device the kids are working on from home. 

I know this has been very challenging for most of you but we must keep striving to reach new successes each day. RV sets high expectations for our kids in many ways and we would like those expectations to be consistent at home. If you have questions for your teacher, I encourage you to reach out to them. We are holding Zoom meetings throughout the week to stay current and work through our own obstacles. Bottom line, we want to get academic work for the kids. 

I appreciate all the parents that stopped at RV today to pick up work organized by their teacher. Packets will be available for pick up in the front entrance between the double doors. I ask that you wait patiently and use the social distancing protocol at pick up. Your teacher will give you instructions on when packets are available. 

Some students still have personal items at the school sitting in bags by the lockers. If you would like to pick up your child's belongings, please let your teacher know and they can contact me.

The district has a new web icon link called “Connecting Cardinals” on the main page of www.brps.org. Please use this central hub to find information and curriculum resources. Also, the District Wide Continuity of Learning Plan is available there.

 

If you still need a technology device please contact the Tech Department.  Please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/ZzHR2Yt6K95Nn8Ud6.   The next two pickup times for chromebooks will be today from 4-6pm, and tomorrow from 3-6pm at BRMS. There are hotspots outside each district school building for your use.

 

As you are well aware, Riverview staff continues to work on providing the best education possible for our students. RV’s expectation is “academic excellence.” Continue to do the best you can while educating your child from home… we know it is a challenge!
