As the school year winds down, Big Rapids Public Schools is saying a bittersweet farewell to some of our most dedicated educators. Today, we are shining a spotlight on Mary Barbot, a beloved teacher at Brookside Elementary who is officially retiring after years of incredible service to our district.
Mary’s journey at BRPS has been defined by versatility, connection, and a deep love for her students. We sat down with her to look back on her career and see what lies ahead in her next chapter.
A Journey Through the Grades
Mary has been a pillar of the BRPS community, adapting and thriving in various roles to meet the needs of our students. She started her journey with our youngest learners and moved through several positions over the years:
First Position: 3rd Grade Teacher
Other Roles Held: Kindergarten, Title I, and 4th Grade Teacher
A Career Built on Connection
When asked to pick just one standout memory from her time at BRPS, Mary found it impossible to narrow it down. For her, the joy was in the daily moments.
"I can't pick one specific time," Mary shared. "My fondest memories include playing fun games with the students, seeing a student proud and confident about something they learned in class, and laughing with fellow teachers."
That focus on relationship-building is also what makes her the most proud. For Mary, true success isn’t measured in test scores, but in the lasting bonds she has created.
"I am most proud when former students come back to tell me the positive impacts I have had on them," she said. "I love hearing them tell me how they learned to love reading chapter books in my class, or some other specific positive memory. I love all the lasting connections I have had with present and past staff and students."
Summary of a Legacy
If she had to summarize her entire time at BRPS in just three words, Mary chose three powerful verbs that perfectly encapsulate her career: "Teach, lead, inspire."
Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
With years of classroom experience under her belt, Mary offered some golden advice for newer staff members just starting out in their education careers:
Take care of yourself.
Ask for help. (Though she jokingly apologized for giving two pieces of advice instead of one, we think both are absolutely essential!)
What Comes Next?
While Mary is excited for the future, she admits that leaving BRPS won't be easy. When asked what she will miss the most, her answer was simple: "Connections with kids and staff."
As she steps into retirement, Mary’s bucket list is all about family and adventure. Her immediate plans include traveling, relaxing, and hanging out with her husband, her children, and her grandchild.
Thank you, Mary, for your unwavering dedication to the students of Brookside Elementary and Big Rapids Public Schools. You have truly taught, led, and inspired us all. Happy retirement!
