As we continue to honor our retiring educators at Big Rapids Public Schools, we are shining the spotlight on a teacher who loved our district so much that she couldn't stay away! After 'retiring' once before, Lori Hathaway returned to the classroom to continue bringing art, passion, and storytelling to our stage. Now, she is officially wrapping up her incredible encore performance and taking her final bow.
As our Theatre Director and Teacher, Lori has spent her career helping students find their voices, build their confidence, and shine in front of the curtains. We caught up with her to reflect on her incredibly impactful career at BRPS.
A Career Dedicated to the Arts
From day one, Lori’s focus has been on literature, communication, and the stage. Over the years, she has guided our students through several critical subjects:
First Position: High School Drama, English, and Speech Teacher
Final Role: Theatre Director and Teacher
A Standout Center-Stage Memory
When you direct as many productions as Lori has, choosing just one memory is tough—but one magical evening at the state level stands above the rest.
"We were selected to perform Seussical at the State Theatre Festival and the audience response was incredible," Lori shared.
Building a Legacy from the Ground Up
Lori didn't just teach theatre; she built a community for our student-artists. When asked what she is most proud of accomplishing during her time as a Cardinal, her impact on our arts programming takes center stage.
"I helped establish a co-curricular Theatre Program and reactivated a Thespian Troupe," she said. Because of her vision, BRPS students have a dedicated, structured space to develop their acting and technical theatre skills for years to come.
Summary of a Legacy
To summarize her entire journey at BRPS in just three words, Lori chose a beautiful mix of grit and creativity: "Challenging, impactful, artistic."
Words of Wisdom for Newer Staff
For those just beginning their journey in education, Lori shares a powerful reminder about the true heart of the profession:
"Teaching is a calling, and you get to make a positive difference in the lives of young people every day."
Taking her Final Bow
While she is ready for her next act, Lori knows exactly what she will miss the most about leaving the district: "My students shining on and offstage."
As she steps back into retirement—this time for good—Lori’s immediate bucket-list plans look a lot like a well-deserved vacation. She plans to spend her time traveling and making memories with her family and friends.
Thank you, Lori, for your dedication to the arts, your students, and the entire BRPS community. You have left an undeniable mark on our stage and in our hearts. Break a leg in retirement!
