A love of books, creativity, and helping students succeed brings Mackenzie Fields to Big Rapids Middle School!
Big Rapids Middle School is welcoming a new face to the classroom this year as Mackenzie Fields begins her teaching career as an ELA and electives teacher.
Originally from Westland, Michigan, Mackenzie recently moved to Mt. Pleasant. She graduated with honors from Eastern Michigan University in May with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Language, Literature, and Writing. Mackenzie is also a first-generation college graduate—a milestone that made her family especially proud.
During her college experience, Mackenzie student taught at Canton High School in Canton, Michigan, and gained additional experience working with middle school students through an after-school program called Bright Futures. There, she led students in a variety of STEM and art activities.
Now, Big Rapids Middle School marks the beginning of Mackenzie's teaching career—and she couldn't be more excited.
“I wanted to find a school that was welcoming and willing to work with a new teacher,” Mackenzie shared. “Big Rapids was definitely that school district! My interviews were enjoyable and I knew that this is where I belonged.”
Her desire to become an educator began long before college. As a young child, Mackenzie would line up her toys and read books to them, pretending to be their teacher.
“I knew I always wanted to be a teacher!” she said. “Education is extremely valuable and I always wanted to be part of a person's journey towards academic success.”
Mackenzie's love of learning extends well beyond the classroom. She's a self-described bookworm who loves reading and creative writing, with fantasy being her favorite genre. She also enjoys running, Pilates, hiking, and exploring nature. One of her favorite hikes so far has been at Tahquamenon Falls.
And when she's looking for a little downtime, you may find Mackenzie playing The Sims 4!
Mackenzie lives with her boyfriend, who is completing his studies in meteorology at Central Michigan University. She also has a six-year-old chinchilla named Poppy. Her family remains one of her biggest sources of support, and they're excited to watch her grow as an educator.
Students may also discover that their new teacher has a creative side. Mackenzie loves to draw and is looking forward to having a whiteboard where she can create fun doodles for her students.
“I am definitely not a master artist, but I really enjoy sketching up characters or animals,” she said.
With her love of literature, creativity, and genuine excitement for working with students, Mackenzie is ready to begin her first year in the classroom.
Welcome to Big Rapids Middle School, Mackenzie! We’re excited to have you begin your teaching journey in Cardinal Country!
