After a legendary career spanning nearly every corner of the district, Riverview Elementary Principal Renee Kent is officially preparing to turn the page to a well-deserved next chapter: retirement.
From the tennis courts to the science labs, and from the high school hallways to the elementary main office, Renee has truly done it all at Big Rapids Public Schools. Over the years, she has served the Cardinal family as a high school Biology and Science teacher, the Varsity Tennis Coach for 18 years, the Athletic Director, the Assistant Principal at Big Rapids High School, and ultimately, as the beloved Principal of Riverview Elementary.
We sat down with Renee to reflect on a remarkable career, look back at some historic achievements, and find out what’s next on the horizon.
A Career Marked by Award-Winning Excellence
When asked what she is most proud of accomplishing during her career, Renee points to a spectacular, historic run of state and national recognition. Under her leadership, the school and district secured an incredible array of accolades, including:
The Michigan Blue Ribbon Award & National Blue Ribbon Award
U.S. News & World Report Top Rankings (Consecutively in 2024, 2025, and 2026)
The Reward School & Beating the Odds Awards
Talent First Top Reading Performance
Niche Award #1 Ranking in Michigan
While these banners and trophies are historic milestones for BRPS, Renee insists the credit belongs to the people in the buildings, proudly attributing these honors to an "award-winning staff."
Reflections & Words of Wisdom
The true heart of Renee’s career has always been the relationships built along the way. When asked to narrow down a standout special memory from her decades with the district, the answer was simple: "Working with an amazing staff." It’s those very people who will be the hardest to leave behind. "I will miss the staff, students, and parents the most," she shared.
For the next generation of educators and staff members just stepping into Big Rapids Public Schools, Renee leaves behind a powerful, motivating piece of advice:
"Don’t let anyone GET YOUR GOOD!"
It is a reminder to take ownership of your passion, bring your absolute best every single day, and never let external pressures dull the impact you can make on a child's life.
The Next Best Version
How do you summarize a career as impactful, diverse, and vibrant as this one? In just three words, Renee calls it: "Best Times Ever!"
As for what the future holds, the bucket list is already set. Alongside the classic retirement staples of traveling and spending cherished quality time with family, Renee has a personal mission for this next chapter: "To be the next best version of myself as a retiree."
Thank you, Principal Renee Kent, for your unwavering leadership, your dedication to our students, and for shaping the culture of excellence at Big Rapids Public Schools. Congratulations on a phenomenal career—once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal!
