As the school year draws to a close, Big Rapids Public Schools is preparing to say a bittersweet farewell to beloved Paraprofessional Christine Bouman, who will be officially retiring at the conclusion of the school year. Since joining the BRPS family in 2015, Christine has spent her career focusing entirely on what she loves most: supporting, encouraging, and guiding our students.
Before she wraps up her final days in the classroom and transitions into this exciting next chapter, we spoke with Christine to reflect on her rewarding career, her favorite memories, and what lies ahead.
A Career Dedicated to Student Connection
Since her very first day with the district, Christine’s role has remained steadfast as a paraprofessional. While her title didn't change over the years, the depth of her impact certainly did. When reflecting on what she is most proud of accomplishing during her tenure, Christine pointed to the meaningful connections she forged with her students:
"Supporting students where they are," Christine shared. "I often work with them in small groups, so it gives you the opportunity to know them better."
It was this tailored, compassionate approach that allowed Christine to meet students exactly where they needed help the most, ensuring no one felt left behind.
Standout Memories and Partnership
When asked to narrow down a single favorite memory from her years of service, Christine found that the most rewarding moments were the ones that came straight from the heart.
"When past students come in to say hi or give you a hug, just because," she recalled. "Or when a student has a light bulb moment and 'gets it.'"
Christine also noted that her time at BRPS was made infinitely brighter by the close bond she shared with a beloved colleague. "Working alongside Terri Garner has been amazing. I am thankful that we've been able to work side by side."
Wisdom for Those Just Starting Out
With years of successful student advocacy under her belt, Christine offers a beautiful piece of advice for new staff members just beginning their educational careers. Her reminder emphasizes the quiet power of daily kindness:
"The little things you do, that just come naturally, are meaningful. Keep doing them."
What Lies Ahead: Family, Travel, and a New Granddaughter
While Christine admits she will deeply miss the daily "smiles and hugs from the students," she is eager to embrace the freedom that retirement will bring.
Her bucket list is already full of meaningful plans, starting with spending time helping her family and doing some traveling. Most exciting of all, Christine is preparing for a wonderful new role later this summer—welcoming a brand-new granddaughter into the family this August!
Thank you, Christine, for your years of unwavering dedication, patience, and love for the students of Big Rapids Public Schools. We wish you a beautiful upcoming retirement filled with wonderful travels and sweet moments with your growing family!
