Court Community Connections BRHS 2025

Today, Big Rapids High School had the incredible honor of hosting the Michigan Supreme Court through its Court Community Connections program, bringing real-world law and civics to life for our students as well as students from local schools.

The day’s events included a judicial procession, student briefing, and welcome remarks, followed by a performance from the BRHS Band. Students then observed the oral argument in a real Supreme Court case examining key questions about search and seizure, including:

Whether the search of the defendant’s person and vehicle exceeded what’s permissible under Terry v. Ohio (1968) and whether the automobile exception applies to civil infractions. (Case details can be seen here: https://www.courts.michigan.gov/courts/supreme-court/case-information-20252026-term_1/october-2025-case-information_1/167737-people-of-mi-v-freddie-wilkins,-iii/)

After the case, students took part in a debriefing session, asked questions of the participating attorneys, and enjoyed photo opportunities and a luncheon with the justices.

Students also learned about an exciting summer opportunity to explore careers in law and public service through a hands-on program that allows participants to research, prepare, and present a mock search and seizure case—just like today’s! This program is open to rising 10th graders through 2026 graduates and offers a great next step for students interested in law.
