Riverview Elementary School is being recognized as a Bright Spots school by The 74, a national education news organization highlighting schools that are beating the odds when it comes to student literacy.
The recognition shines a spotlight on the work happening every day at Riverview Elementary, where teachers, reading specialists, support staff and administrators work together to help students build strong foundational reading skills and develop a love of learning.
The 74’s Bright Spots initiative examined third-grade reading performance in more than 41,000 schools across the country and compared reading proficiency with local poverty rates. The analysis identified schools where students’ reading performance was significantly higher than would be expected based on the economic circumstances of the communities they serve.
Riverview is among those schools recognized for demonstrating that students can achieve strong literacy outcomes regardless of the challenges that may exist beyond the classroom.
“This recognition is a reflection of the dedication of our Riverview staff and the commitment they have to helping every student become a successful reader,” said Heather Zocco. “Our teachers and support staff work incredibly hard to understand what each student needs and to provide the instruction and support that helps them grow. We are proud to see their work recognized.”
While the Bright Spots designation is based on student achievement data, the story behind that data is found in Riverview classrooms each day — in teachers planning purposeful instruction, reading specialists providing additional support, students persevering through challenging texts and families partnering with the school to support learning.
The 74 encourages Bright Spots schools to share the recognition with their school communities and make the celebration personal by highlighting the educators and programs that contributed to the achievement.
For Riverview, the recognition provides an opportunity to celebrate not only the students who are developing into confident readers, but also the educators who make that growth possible.
“Reading is foundational to everything our students will do as learners,” said Principal Zocco. “We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful for the people who support them every day. This recognition belongs to our entire Riverview community.”
The Bright Spots recognition adds to a growing list of accomplishments for Riverview Elementary and Big Rapids Public Schools. It is also a reminder that meaningful student success is built through the consistent work of educators, families and students — one lesson, one book and one reader at a time.
