What MTSS Means for Students and Families
MTSS, or Multi-Tiered System of Supports, is a framework schools use to help every student succeed—academically, socially, and behaviorally. It’s a proactive approach where educators regularly look at data to see what’s working, identify where students might need extra help, and ensure that all students feel supported and ready to learn.
At Big Rapids, the MTSS framework connects directly with our CARDS system, which teaches and reinforces the character traits of being Compassionate, Accountable, Responsible, Determined, and Safe. These are the values that guide how students treat others, make decisions, and contribute to the school community. By aligning CARDS with MTSS, BRPS creates consistent expectations and supports that help students thrive in school and beyond.
The Michigan Department of Education’s MiMTSS Recognition process celebrates schools and districts that are successfully implementing MTSS to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students. Recognition is awarded in two areas—Data Utilization and Implementation and Impact—based on criteria from the MiMTSS Technical Assistance Center.
Big Rapids Public Schools’ recognition highlights the dedication of staff across all levels to building a positive, data-driven system that helps every student grow, learn, and succeed—both as learners and as CARDS.
