Big Rapids Public Schools is excited to welcome Erin Johnson, better known to students as Mr. Johnson or Mr. J, as our new Middle School Physical Education teacher. With a strong background in education, leadership, and student-centered learning, Mr. Johnson is thrilled to be back where his passion truly lies—the classroom.
Originally from Hoopeston, Illinois, Mr. Johnson grew up in a small town of about 5,000 people, an experience that helped shape his appreciation for close-knit communities and strong school connections. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Illinois State University, and later completed a Health Education endorsement from Grand Valley State University.
Family is a big part of Mr. Johnson’s life. He has been married to his wife, Penney, for 14 wonderful years. Together, they have two children: Saul, who is 17 and a high school senior, and Maddie, who is 11 and currently in 6th grade. Their household also includes two rescue pets—Blue, a 9-year-old mixed breed dog, and Stella, a 2-year-old cat.
Outside of school, the Johnson family loves spending time outdoors and taking advantage of everything Michigan has to offer. Summer often finds them kayaking or at the beach, while Mr. Johnson and his wife also enjoy running and competing in races together. Their children stay busy too—Saul is involved in E-Sports and previously ran cross country, while Maddie participates in softball, basketball, volleyball, and just about every social activity she can find.
Before joining Big Rapids Public Schools, Mr. Johnson spent 15 years at Muskegon Catholic Central, where he served in many roles, including guest teacher, coach, physical education and health teacher, assistant principal, interim principal, and dean of students. After gaining valuable experience as an administrator, he felt a strong pull to return to the classroom—particularly at the middle school level, where he believes he can make the greatest impact.
One fun fact students and families might be surprised to learn? Mr. Johnson is the youngest of six children and a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan—a loyalty that started back in his Illinois roots.
We are excited to have Mr. Johnson as part of the Big Rapids Middle School team and look forward to the energy, experience, and enthusiasm he brings to our students as they get back from the holiday break. Welcome to BRPS, Mr. J!
