Michigan Storm Chaser Visits BRHS

Big Rapids High School students had a unique learning opportunity today with a special visit from Chief Meteorologist Joel Fritsma of the Michigan Storm Chasers. The visit was arranged by High School science teacher Samantha Lipscomb, who invited Mr. Fritsma to speak with her meteorology class about both the science behind weather forecasting and careers in the field.

During his presentation, Mr. Fritsma shared the story of the Michigan Storm Chasers, discussed pathways into meteorology-related careers, and explained how severe weather is forecasted and tracked. Students learned about lake-effect snow, how to read weather radar, methods used to detect tornadoes, and the importance of severe weather preparedness.

The visit gave students a real-world look at meteorology in action and highlighted how classroom learning connects directly to careers that impact public safety across Michigan.

BRHS extends its sincere appreciation to Joel Fritsma for taking the time to share his expertise and provide students with an engaging, real-world learning experience that brought meteorology to life.
