What a Story! What a Kid! Honoring Kaiden Canfield for his heroic actions at BR Middle School

Big Rapids — An unexpected situation at Big Rapids Middle School recently highlighted the importance of preparation, awareness, and student leadership.

During a passing time between classes, a lockdown was accidentally called, creating a moment of uncertainty in the building. Fortunately, Big Rapids Public Schools has long prioritized safety training, equipping students at every grade level with the knowledge of how to respond in emergency situations.

Thanks to that preparation, one student stepped up in an extraordinary way.

Kaiden Canfield, a sixth-grade student at Big Rapids Middle School, acted immediately when the lockdown was announced. Noticing several students still in the hallway, Kaiden quickly gathered them and guided them into a nearby classroom. Once inside, he ensured the door was secured using the school’s door locking system and helped keep the group calm, quiet, and safely in place until the situation was resolved.

Staff members praised Kaiden’s actions, noting that his awareness and leadership made a meaningful difference in ensuring the safety of his peers.

While Kaiden himself was humble about the experience and did not view his actions as heroic, those around him certainly did.

“His quick thinking and ability to take charge in a moment like that is exactly what we hope for when we train our students,” said interim Assistant Principal Heather Zocco.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder that safety training matters—and that even at a young age, students are capable of rising to the occasion. Way to go, Kaiden — your courage, leadership, and care for others make us incredibly proud to call you a Cardinal!
