BIG RAPIDS, MI — Big Rapids High School is thrilled to announce that senior Benjamin D. Wayne has advanced to the semifinalist round of the prestigious 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
This monumental update follows our announcement back in February, when Ben was initially named an Arts candidate for the program. Out of more than 5,000 elite candidates nationwide who applied for this cycle, Ben has successfully navigated the highly competitive spring review process to become one of only 19 students selected as a semifinalist from the entire State of Michigan.
One of the Nation's Highest Honors
Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected based on superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and extensive involvement in community and school activities.
While the general component of the program selects students based on exceptional SAT or ACT scores, Ben is uniquely recognized as a Scholar in the Arts. To qualify for this distinction, students must demonstrate extraordinary academic achievement alongside elite talent in the visual, creative, or performing arts, earning a direct nomination from the chief state school officer.
State-Wide Recognition
On May 20th, the Michigan Department of Education officially released the exclusive list of the 19 Michigan students moving forward. State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko praised the semifinalists, stating:
“These 19 students represent the many outstanding scholars we have across Michigan. They should be very proud of this recognition, and so should their families, educators, and school communities who supported them along the way. I wish them all the best as the U.S. Department of Education selects this year’s scholars.”
What’s Next for Ben
The journey doesn’t end here. The Commission on U.S. Presidential Scholars will now review the remaining semifinalists to select the final 161 scholarship winners from across the nation.
No matter the final outcome, the entire Big Rapids Public Schools community is incredibly proud of Ben's remarkable dedication, artistry, and academic excellence. He has represented the Cardinals on a national stage and cemented his place among the most distinguished young leaders in the country.
Congratulations, Ben! The entire Cardinal family is cheering you on!
