It is often said that the true measure of a teacher's career isn't found in lesson plans or test scores, but in the lasting impressions left on the hearts of their students. By that measure, Maureen Somsel has achieved something truly extraordinary. As this school year comes to a close, the beloved fifth-grade math teacher is preparing to retire, leaving behind a profound legacy of connection, love, and community at Big Rapids Public Schools.
Maureen’s journey with the Cardinal family began in a supportive role as a paraprofessional at Riverview Elementary. Her passion for guiding students quickly led her to the front of the classroom, where she has spent the vast majority of her distinguished career, specializing in guiding fifth graders through a critical year of growth and discovery.
A Heart Filled by Returning Students
When asked to pinpoint a single standout memory from her decades in education, Maureen notes that her finest moments don't happen on just one day—they happen year-after-year at her classroom door.
"I don't have one special moment," Maureen shared. "Every year, I am honored by the students who come back to visit with me on a consistent basis. Sometimes a teacher doesn't realize the impact they made until years later."
It is those very visits that serve as her proudest professional accomplishment. For Maureen, teaching was never just a job; it was an investment in people. "I am proud of all the lives I've touched," she said. "I have gotten so much back in return! I have students come back to see me year after year. The students have become part of my heart."
Words of Wisdom: Focusing on What Truly Matters
For the educators just beginning their careers, Maureen leaves behind a beautifully practical, deeply compassionate blueprint for longevity in the classroom:
"Say a little prayer for patience every morning. It helps—most days! Also, do not sweat the small stuff. Focus on what really matters. The relationships are the most important part for both the student and the teacher."
This philosophy guided Maureen through every school year, allowing her to look past the minor daily stressors and focus entirely on providing a safe, welcoming environment for the children who needed it most.
Fulfilling, Honored, and Belonging
Saying goodbye to a community that has become home is never easy. When looking ahead to what she will miss the most, Maureen points directly to her deep support systems: "The staff members who have become family, and the students who show up even though they don't have strong family support."
When asked to summarize her incredible career at BRPS in just three words, she chose: "Fulfilling, honored, belonging."
As she steps into her next chapter, Maureen is trading fractions and formulas for cherished milestones with the people she loves. Her immediate retirement plans are centered entirely around family time, including spending precious days with her 91-year-old mother and taking advantage of the freedom to visit her children, who are spread out across the country.
Thank you, Maureen Somsel, for being a steady anchor, a patient mentor, and a lifelong sanctuary for so many Big Rapids students. Your impact will be felt for generations to come. Congratulations on your retirement!
