After being a part of the Big Rapids Public Schools family for three decades, beloved Grounds Custodian David Sims officially retired at the end of the last calendar year. David first joined BRPS in 1995, and following his transition to full-time service in 1996, he spent the next 29 years working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our facilities safe, beautiful, and running smoothly.
We spoke with David as he reflected on his remarkable career, his proudest moments, and what lies ahead in his well-deserved next chapter.
A Journey of Service Across the District
David’s deep roots in the district began in October of 1995 as a substitute bus driver before stepping into his full-time career the following year. When asked about his history with BRPS, David shared a timeline of versatility and dedication:
"I started at BR driving a school bus," David recalled. "Over the years, I've served as a custodian at both the High School and Brookside, and ultimately moved into outdoor grounds and maintenance."
No matter the role—whether ensuring students arrived safely at school, keeping the hallways clean, or maintaining the expansive outdoor areas—David approached his work with quiet pride and a steady work ethic.
Building a Complex, Supporting a Community
Of all the projects David witnessed and contributed to during his tenure, one standout achievement holds a special place in his heart: the development of the district's athletic facilities.
When asked what he was most proud of accomplishing during his career, David pointed right to the fields. "Cardinal Stadium being built, and being able to prep and maintain the facility for the students and the community." Thanks to David’s meticulous care, multiple classes of Cardinals have had top-tier fields to compete, play, and gather on.
Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
With a lifetime of district history under his belt, David leaves behind a powerful perspective for the educators and support staff just beginning their journeys at Big Rapids Public Schools. His advice is simple, grounding, and centers on what truly matters:
"Always keep in mind you are here for the safety and growth of the students."
It is this student-first mindset that defined David's career and earned him the immense respect of his colleagues.
What Lies Ahead: Camping, Projects, and Family
While David is looking forward to the slower pace of retirement, he admits there are elements of the daily grind he will deeply miss. "Just talking and working with the faculty and other staff," he noted, reflecting on the close-knit community he helped foster.
However, his retirement bucket list is already full. David’s immediate plans include spending plenty of quality time with his grandchildren, heading out into nature for camping trips, and finally tackling "all the projects I’ve put off long enough."
Thank you, David, for your incredible 30 years of dedication to Big Rapids Public Schools and for making it a safer, cleaner, and brighter place for our students to grow. We hope you continue to enjoy your retirement!
