Big Rapids Public Schools is excited to welcome Mara Lutz, better known to her students as Ms. L, as the newest third-grade teacher at Riverview Elementary! Although she spent much of her childhood in the Grand Rapids area, returning to Big Rapids feels like coming home.
Born in Big Rapids, Ms. L moved to Cedar Springs as a young child, where she attended Cedar Springs Public Schools. She later earned her bachelor's degree in Teacher Education from Saginaw Valley State University, completing certifications for both PreK–3 and grades 3–6. During college, she was actively involved in several campus organizations and served as a student researcher on two literacy-focused research studies, further strengthening her passion for helping children become confident readers and lifelong learners.
Before joining the Riverview team, Ms. L taught fifth grade in Cedar Springs. While she cherished her time with her previous students, she is excited to begin a new adventure in third grade and continue helping young learners build confidence, curiosity, and a love of school.
For Ms. L, becoming a teacher was inspired by someone who made a lasting impact on her own life.
"My inspiration for a career in education stems from one of my own teachers, the darling Ms. Winter," she shared. "In second grade, I felt challenged, supported, and excited every day. My goal as an educator is to carry on the passion she instilled in me and help inspire my own students with a love for learning."
Outside the classroom, Ms. L enjoys spending time with her fiancé, whom she became engaged to earlier this year, and their energetic doodle, Archie. Whether she's taking Archie for long walks or tackling her latest creative project, she loves staying active and trying new things. One of her favorite hobbies is pottery, a passion that brings back fond memories of teaching pottery and ceramics to children.
Students may also discover that Ms. L has no shortage of Cardinal pride. She loves showing her school spirit and says if you ever spot a teacher wearing a BRPS tutu at a school event, there's a good chance you've found her!
As she begins her first year at Riverview Elementary, Ms. L is excited to build meaningful relationships with her students and their families while creating a classroom where every child feels supported, encouraged, and inspired to learn.
Please join us in giving Ms. L a warm Cardinal welcome to Riverview Elementary and Big Rapids Public Schools!
