For Erin Pressley, this year marks an exciting new chapter in a journey that began right here at Big Rapids Public Schools. After spending four years as a paraprofessional at Big Rapids Middle School, Erin is now taking over the fifth-grade classroom previously held by longtime educator Maureen Somsel.
A Big Rapids native and 2018 graduate of Big Rapids Public Schools, Erin earned her bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University. She returned to Big Rapids Middle School after college and spent four years working alongside students and staff as a paraprofessional. During that time, she discovered how much she enjoyed building relationships with students and helping them grow both inside and outside the classroom.
Those experiences ultimately inspired Erin to pursue teaching.
“After spending four years as a paraprofessional, I realized just how much I enjoyed building relationships with students and helping them grow both inside and outside the classroom,” Erin shared. “Those experiences inspired me to pursue teaching and confirmed that it was the career I was meant for.”
Before pursuing her teaching certificate, Erin also managed a small business, bringing a variety of experiences and skills with her as she transitions into her new role.
Taking over a classroom at her former middle school is especially meaningful for Erin. As a Big Rapids graduate herself, she understands firsthand the impact that the school community can have on students.
“Teaching at my old middle school is incredibly meaningful to me,” she said. “I’m grateful to now be part of the Big Rapids Public Schools team and excited to give back to the school community that played such an important role in my own education.”
Outside of school, Erin enjoys spending time with friends and family and making memories through travel and new adventures. She loves hiking, attending concerts, and exploring thrift stores. She is also a proud aunt to seven nieces and nephews and has an English Springer Spaniel named Ollie.
One of the most special parts of returning to the middle school has been the opportunity to work alongside some of the teachers who once taught her.
“One thing that might surprise students and parents is that I now have the opportunity to work alongside some of my own former teachers!” Erin said. “It has been such a special experience to return to the middle school and learn from the educators who helped shape me into the person and teacher I am today.”
As Erin steps into the fifth-grade classroom, she brings with her years of experience at BRMS, a deep connection to the Big Rapids community, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed.
Welcome to your new role, Erin! We’re excited to see you continue your journey in Cardinal Country and make this classroom your own.
