A familiar face returns to Big Rapids Public Schools as a new Special Education teacher at Big Rapids Middle School!
Big Rapids Middle School is welcoming Colee Cheney to the teaching staff this year, but she is already a familiar face to many in the BRPS community.
Colee grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in a small town near Sault Ste. Marie. She recently graduated from Lake Superior State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (3-6), along with a concentration in Learning Disabilities (K-12).
Her connection to Big Rapids Public Schools began during her college experience. Last year, Colee completed her student teaching right here in the district, completing her Special Education placement at Big Rapids Middle School and her General Education placement at Brookside Elementary.
It didn't take long for Colee to know that Big Rapids was where she wanted to begin her teaching career.
“I quickly fell in love with everything about the school community, the students, the staff, and the supportive environment,” Colee shared. “It was during that experience that I knew I wanted to be a part of this district.”
Colee has always had a passion for working with students and believes strongly in getting to know each student as an individual.
“I love getting to know each student as an individual, celebrating their strengths, and helping them grow,” she said. “I feel incredibly fortunate to now be part of a community where I can build meaningful relationships, make a positive impact, and help every student feel supported, valued, and excited to learn!”
Outside of school, Colee loves spending time outdoors with her family. The water is a favorite destination, and you can often find them enjoying time together at Lake Superior or Lake Michigan. She also enjoys reading, running, and baking.
Colee is also an animal lover with three fur babies at home—a bunny and two dogs!
And if students want to know something surprising about their new teacher, Colee has spent the past six summers working at a summer camp. She loves spending her summers outdoors, building relationships with kids, and creating fun and memorable experiences.
After experiencing the BRPS community as a student teacher, Colee is excited to now officially become part of the team.
