A passion for helping students and families brings experienced social worker Corey Thompson to Big Rapids Middle School.
Big Rapids Middle School is welcoming Corey Thompson as its new social worker. With 17 years of experience in the mental health field, Corey brings a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for helping children and families to her new role at BRPS.
Corey grew up in Augusta, Michigan, near Kalamazoo. After high school, she attended Ferris State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Work. She then continued her education at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, earning her master’s degree in Social Work.
Before joining Big Rapids Public Schools, Corey worked in a variety of settings, including other schools, a residential center, outpatient therapy, and most recently, private practice. Those experiences have given her a broad perspective on the many different needs students and families may encounter.
Throughout her career, one thing has remained constant: Corey’s passion for working with children and helping them succeed.
“I absolutely love working with children and their families,” Corey shared. “I have a true passion for helping all kids be successful in their lives.”
Outside of school, Corey enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and animals. She and her husband, Andrew, have been married for 12 years and have two children, 10-year-old Killian and 4-year-old Ripken.
The Thompson family lives in Stanwood on a small hobby farm, where they share their home with goats, rabbits, turkeys, chickens, dogs, and cats!
Corey also enjoys reading and giving back to her community. She is one of the leaders of the 4-H Morley-Stanwood Critter Club, where she enjoys spending time with local children and their families throughout the year. She also volunteers at her church, ResLife.
Her love of community, family, and service will undoubtedly be an asset as she begins building relationships with students and families at Big Rapids Middle School.
