A passion for education and a return to Michigan bring Ben VanKlompenberg to Big Rapids Middle School.
Big Rapids Middle School is welcoming Ben VanKlompenberg—better known as Mr. VK—as its new physical education teacher. With experience as both a classroom teacher and school administrator, Ben is excited to return to the classroom and become part of the Big Rapids Public Schools community.
Ben grew up in Jenison, Michigan, but spent the past 17 years living and working outside the state in Texas and Kentucky. Now, he and his family are back in their home state and excited to call Michigan home once again.
Before joining BRPS, Ben taught Social Studies in Houston, Texas, and in Anchorage, Kentucky. Most recently, he served as an assistant principal at South Oldham High School in Kentucky.
“Education has been a passion of my life, and I’m excited to continue that in BRPS!” Ben shared.
Ben and his wife, Natalie, have been married for 17 years. The couple has five children—four daughters, Hazel, Zuri, Lilah and Hattie, and their 5-year-old son, Weston. The family also includes their dog, Hank. Over the years, they've also had chickens, rabbits, quail, cats, and plenty of other animals.
When they aren't busy with school and family life, the VanKlompenbergs love spending time outdoors. Camping, playing sports, hiking, hunting, and spending quality time with friends and family are some of their favorite ways to spend time together. They also value being involved and connected with their community.
And if you think moving to a new state is a big undertaking, Ben's family took it to another level—they moved from Kentucky to Michigan just two days before the start of the school year!
Ben is looking forward to getting to know his students, building relationships, and bringing his enthusiasm for education and an active lifestyle to Big Rapids Middle School.
